Space and architecture in cinema often serve as more than just physical settings, they become active forces that shape narrative, mood and character. In this conversation, Monica Strømdahl, Patrik Syversen, and Odd Einar Ingebretsen explore how these elements operate as creative dogmas: self-imposed rules that guide their cinematic language and unlock new forms of storytelling.
From confined interiors that echo inner turmoil, to shifting landscapes that map memory and transformation, to minimalist spatial compositions that evoke absence and contemplation, these filmmakers demonstrate how architecture and environment frame not only where stories unfold, but how they are experienced. They explore how spatial constraints foster creative freedom, how their surroundings influence the dialogue between characters, and how atmosphere and emotion are crafted through physical space.
Together, they reveal how space and architecture can transcend visual backdrop to become vessels for emotional truth, shaping films that resonate on levels beyond traditional narrative, inviting audiences into immersive, living worlds.
