The short film occupies a curious place in the world of cinema. It’s often presented as the beginning of something: an exercise, a sketch, a step towards a feature. Filmmakers make shorts to demonstrate what they can do, producers use them to discover new voices, funding bodies treat the form as a space for talent development.
For MIRAGE, this is only part of the picture, as we also believe the short film is one of cinema's most vital spaces of freedom. Less constrained by the demand for financial returns or the pressure to reach the widest possible audience, the short film allows filmmakers to pursue an idea without bending it towards a familiar feature film formula. Instead cinema can breathe, discover unexpected connections, and expand our understanding of what moving images and sound can do. This makes the short film a space in which cinematic language can continually be reinvented. Many of film history’s artistic breakthroughs have emerged in short forms, not only because they require fewer resources, but because they permit different kinds of risk. As a festival, we have a responsibility to create space for these works, and we are excited to share this year's short film program.
