As part of MIRAGE's effort to highlight classics from film history, VIDEOCRACY is a study of rhythm, pacing, and the manipulative qualities of the art of editing. Original title: Videocracy Year: 2009 Duration: 85 min. Country of Production: Sweden, Denmark, United Kingdom, Finland Languages: English, Italian Cinematographers: Manuel Alberto Claro, Lukas Eisenhauer Sound Designer: Hans Møller Director: Erik Gandini Editor: Johan Söderberg Producers: Erik Gandini

The film follows Silvio Berlusconi from his early career as a media mogul to his rise to power as the Prime Minister of Italy. A rhythmic and cacophonous audiovisual journey digging into the influence and impact of media and television on an entire country, and how this has been part of shaping the Italy we know today. Unfortunately, it also provides a crystal-clear depiction of a universally applicable trend that has become far more complex and challenging since Berlusconi's heyday, with factors like social media and Artificial Intelligence emerging as tools for gaining power and political manipulation.

Director Erik Gandini and editor Johan Söderberg have done a fantastic job creating a film that, while not necessarily nuanced, is undoubtedly intriguing, engaging, and shocking, with an exquisitely manipulative quality of its own.

«You think the topic is so super interesting, but then when the audience sees the film it’s just not as interesting for them. But it could also start something new that eventually could lead to some sort of change.»
