Introduction to the film by Audun Vinger, the editor of Jazznytt.

After three weeks of touring Europe in 1969, six days a week, a year before he gave up playing altogether, the legendary jazz pioneer Thelonious Monk arrived in Paris to perform that same evening, only having to do this TV show first. Gomis’ access to all the raw material from the show, including the behind-the-scenes rushes, reveals a completely different mood than what the original TV version of the show portrayed. Getting very close and intimate to Monk, the footage was beautiful, yet horrifying at the same time, showing the true face of pre-programmed TV only searching for the answers they want. REWIND & PLAY is both a portrait of an artist trying to exist only for his music and a film about how hollow the media machine is and journalism's capacity to steer whatever story in any way they see fit. It’s hard to imagine what these kinds of trials were like for black artists at the time, and how it's unfortunately still not so different today.

This screening is in collaboration with the magazine Jazznytt and with help from our friends at Oslo Jazzfestival.
